Good points! I also feel that with typing/texting now, it is easier to learn kanji because of the way that Japanese language keyboards are set up— you write the word in hiragana and the phone suggests kanji that would fit that. So even if you need time to learn all the correct strokes for each character, you can use texting as a shortcut so long as you have a vague idea of what the character you are looking for looks like.
